关于日本的战争道歉：中国人的认知扭曲
有关国家出面为战争罪行道歉的研究在国际关系领域已经十分成熟了，但是公众仍然对这些情况一无所知。
普通中国民众不仅不知道日本战后已多次向东亚和东南亚各国反复郑重道歉，他们还喜欢拿日本跟德国比较，以为德国是道歉诚恳才换取原谅。这种看法不符合事实。
根据2021年发表的一篇论文《German and Japanese war crime apologies: A contrastive pragmatic study》，德国道歉诚恳程度反而不如日本，日本的措辞不仅更具体、更丰富、还更直接；德国措辞几乎没有什么变化，转来转去都是“（向受害国家）表示愧疚和羞耻”，而且通常还不如日本直接。日本的认罪方式是为了更贴合东亚和东南亚社会文化特点，所以还比德国措辞更丰富、更具体。
有关日本道歉措辞的相关研究还可以参考《Japanese Apologies for World War II: A Rhetorical Study》。
还有一本比较德国和日本战争道歉的重要著作《Ghosts in the Neighborhood: Why Japan Is Haunted by Its Past and Germany Is Not》，这本书注意到日本不但道歉次数越来越多，还通常很诚恳，但为什么日本收到的效果如此之差呢？该书认为，德国道歉少却很成功，很大程度上是得益于成立了许多机构来对受害国家进行具体沟通（比如加强经济合作和文化交往），这些机构大大减少了邻国的敌意。
但这项研究还是有问题，日本与中国同样存在着不少交流机构来增强民间沟通，而且日本为中国提供巨额政府开发援助很多年，但中国对日本社会的敌意就持续升高。相比之下，日本跟东南亚关系最好，而且（鉴于日本政府已多次向东南亚道歉）东南亚几乎没有再要求日本道歉，反而还跟日本加深了许多合作。
目前主要是中国民族主义分子跟韩国左翼民族主义分子在无穷无尽地要求日本道歉。1998年，韩国总统金大中访问日本，日本与韩国签署《日韓共同宣言》，其中应金大中要求，日本在该宣言中郑重道歉。金大中承诺，拿到这份郑重的书面道歉以后，韩国不再向日本索取道歉。结果，2001年韩国国会竟废除了这一宣言。也就是说，就算日本出具了最郑重的书面道歉承诺，也一样换不来韩国原谅。
中国的情况跟韩国左翼民族主义分子很像：都是因为极端民族主义一再要求道歉，但无论如何都不可能满足。这样一来，反复要求道歉逐渐变成了“情绪勒索”，因为其目的不是获取道歉，而是持续挑动仇日情绪和持续羞辱日本。韩国每回轮到右翼政府上台就跟日本和好关系，轮到左翼政府上台就跟日本撕破脸皮。
但是与韩国左翼民族主义略有不同，江泽民以后的中国对日本进行“情绪勒索”旨在始终打压日本的国际生存空间，将日本置于东亚国际秩序从属位置。不论日本怎么为战争道歉，只要日本不背弃美国，转而服从中国，日本就不要幻想靠道歉换取中国原谅。
上述研究不仅援引了大量有关日本就历史问题道歉的案例或原文，还对日本为什么没能够换取中韩两国（民族主义分子）谅解进行了研究，但都存在一定的缺点，因为没有对中韩两国国内的民族主义考虑进来。因为日本在东南亚並不是完全失败，日本赢得了东南亚国家原谅，尽管日本对中国和韩国的道歉行为并不见得不如对东南亚诚恳。

The US tax code is a whopping 6,800 pages—longer than Marcel Proust’s "In Search of Lost Time," the longest book ever written, at 4,200 pages.
